A Garment A Week – Week 47 – 25/11/16
So the voice in my head said all weekend – ‘relax, you’ve finished the dress’, then it changed on Monday to be ‘AAAHHH!! you’ve forgotten to take photos and upload it!’ lol So after some quick photos after work yesterday and time now to edit and upload after work today!
This is the dress I had wanted to make for my Christmas drinks Unfortunately I didn’t get to sew it up until after the drinks evening (luckily really as it turned out to be a very casual affair). The fabric is a soft silky poly which was actually really nice to sew up.
I drafted the pattern using my lovely mannequin but I’ve also realised she isn’t as tall as I am! so I still have to periodically try the pattern on too.
The pattern bodice sat really nicely which unfortunately didn’t transfer to the dress. I had to stitch down the pleats under the folds to hold it all together and I still think it needs a bit more work.
The bodice is fully lined and were I to remake it I would perhaps fuse the lining with a heavier fusing to help hold the shape. Also I’d remember to attach the back of the straps when sewing the lining and outer together! At the moment you can see the stitches where they attach at the back.
The skirt is french seamed and the hem rolled twice narrowly. There are darts in it front and back except the right front where it pleats.
There are matching pleats in the skirt to the bodice at the side.
It is a wrap dress and it ties at the right-hand side with narrow ties. There is also a hidden dome holding the other side in place.
It’s really nice and easy to wear, though without a few more bodice tweaks I’d need the hollywood tape to hold the bodice in place were I to wear it out now and feel comfortable.
