A Garment A Week – Week 16 – 22/04/16
One Friday after school my friend Angela’s gorgeous daughter gave me a few notes she’d written for me 🙂
Alisha wanted me to make her a dress for the school disco coming up next month. I did have to ask her where her arms were supposed to go but otherwise her drawing spoke for itself!
I had a hunt through my fabric stash and I actually had a piece of lime green cotton. I didn’t have any hot pink but I had some sequins – and whats better for a disco than sequins?
I lined the stripes with a pink cotton so they still have a pink shimmer.
I drew out a basic dress shape, then added the stripes in the similar pattern to the ones Alisha had drawn. Then I pieced it all together kinda like patchwork. I think next time I come across a similar garment I may try to stitch the stripes ontop of a full front panel. This way worked but the seams underneath at the stripe joins are a little bulky. Although it was definitely easy to just cut the pieces this time as my fabric piece wasn’t very big. A couple of the panels ended up not cut on grain but as it’s a non stretch, fairly stiff cotton, it didn’t make much difference to the sewing or the fall of the final garment.
The stripes on the back are made just to match up with the ones on the front at the side.
I did ask her Mum what size to make and I worked roughly to a size 8 with elastic at the back, but upon surprising Alisha yesterday with the dress we discovered she’s a lot skinnier lol.
So we pinned it in the back for the photos and I’ll change the elastic and maybe add a box pleat or a few tucks at the back to bring it in without having to add a back seam which will disrupt the stripes.
The bodice half is lined front and back with the pink cotton so the seams won’t be scratchy and I added a couple of skinny straps at the top point of the triangle so it would stay up.
Alisha looks super cute <3 and it was a fun project to work on this week 🙂
