A Garment A Week – Week 6 – 12/02/2016

A Garment A Week - stitchremedy.com - Denim upcycled Jacket and Dress

Bonus week!

My kids are on holiday with their Dad this week so I’ve been keeping myself busy sewing lots.
I found an image on pinterest of a denim bomber jacket and decided I needed one! I created a pattern, made a mock in fabric and went to raid my stash for fabric. I was certain I had blue denim but all I could find was grey. Then the only ribbing I could find was green! I cut out the jacket in the grey with long sleeves and pockets but I really wanted a blue one, so I decided to cut up a pair of old jeans 🙂

A Garment A Week - week 6 - the jeans that got cut up!

I really like the effect the wearing has had on the final product. I was also lucky to find navy ribbing at the second hand shop and am heading to a fabric shop this weekend to find the black ribbing (will post up a pic when I finish it).

The blue denim jacket has 3/4 sleeves as this was as long as I could make the sleeves and get in all the other pattern pieces on the jeans.  I still struggled to get the upper back piece at all, it was made by sewing strips of the leftovers together.  I should have tried to find a bigger pair of jeans to cut up.  It has ribbed cuffs, collar and waist band. An open ended zip and facings around the neck and front. The jacket is unlined and just over-locked inside.

I then decided I had nothing to wear under the jacket to photograph it lol
So I made a dress.  I have a dress similar to this one and I love it. So comfortable and it always looks really nice. I was thinking I was making a dress I could wear all the time but upon testing the fabric with the iron before ironing the dress, I’m pretty sure this fabric is part silk, so not an everyday dress. Will have to make another 🙂

The bodice is lined with a nude colour knit. I was going to line the skirt too but I decided the fabric was opaque enough and I didn’t want to add too much bulk. The lining is also shorter than the outer bodice to create the blouson effect. The waist seam is turned into a casing with elastic and a tie around the waist to cover it.
I will get a lot of wear out of both pieces and the grey jacket once it’s finished and the weather gets cooler.

Looking forward to my trip to the fabric shop tomorrow!
