A Garment A Week - Week 29 - A light knit wrap dress with french seams - stitchremedy.com

Looking forward to school going back next week! A busy week with work and kids.

I wanted to make another version of this pattern this week too but I just ran out of time! A shorter version with shorter sleeves that are cut with the front, not attached separately and cut looser to be a comfy tunic wrap top for over jeans etc.
This is a wrap dress, made from a light t-shirt weight knit fabric. Possibly too light weight as it is a bit see through when it’s only one layer thick. I did make it to wear like the pictures – with stockings and a merino top underneath, so it won’t be worn without at least a slip under it.
The pattern is drafted from my block pattern and I used a wrap cardigan to get the proportions of the front panels right.

All the seams are french seams.  Crazy on a knit fabric, yes I know lol.  And it is pulling up the sleeves a little but I had no extra red thread for the overlocker and I didn’t want black or white thread showing through.  I also managed to french seam the sleeves!  Virtually impossible on non stretch fabric but they came out ok.  Hopefully the stitching won’t pop.  I need to invest in a lot more thread in different colours.

There is a gap in the side seam on the right hand side that the strap from the left goes through and they can be tied at the back or pulled around the front. I didn’t quite make the ties long enough but they reach just lol.

The neckline is bound and turned under, the binding continues as the straps. I think I should’ve made a facing in the right shape for the neckline or actually cut the binding on the bias. As it doesn’t quite sit right around the curves – better with a press but still not quite right. The sleeve is the same pattern I drafted for the knit drapey wrap cardigan.
All the other edges are just turned and stitched about 0.75cm wide. I would have coverseamed sleeves and hem if I had a double needle machine at home.

Wrong side of binding and tie above and right side below.

Hopefully something easy and comfy to wear, if not a little bright lol. And I need to get a thinner merino top that doesn’t show the thickness of the hem through the dress.  Hopefully I’ll get the chance to hack the pattern further and create the other top too 🙂
