A Garment A Week - Week 18 - A light denim wrap skirt with pockets! - stitchremedy.com

My friend Karen sent me a pic of a similar skirt to this one on Pinterest weeks ago, I’ve been wanting to try it but I didn’t have the right fabric – until another friend Tammy gave me some pieces in the holidays! This is a nice light cotton denim.
I’ve been suffering from a cold and migraines this week and I was getting concerned that I wouldn’t make it this week! but two hours of patterning and cutting last night and two hours of sewing this morning and voile!

The mannequin made a huge difference in patterning especially for this skirt. I set the measurements to mine and didn’t try it on me until the last step – it fit perfect!
This wrap skirt has pockets on each side and the top wrap looks like it sits over the waistband rather than under it.  It is joined into the two layers of the waistband.    A basic back, just a couple of darts, maybe it needs a pocket or two?
A couple of tucks at each side on the front and the upper piece is hemmed longer at an angle.
The sides have splits at the bottom. I think maybe the shape would sit better with a split at the back instead.  I think the original I used for the design was made from a firmer denim.
I have top stitched most of the seams and rolled the edges at the splits, long open sides and hem. The skirt is held up with small domes hidden under the waistband.
I would have liked to use buttons – need a buttonhole machine 🙂
Still really comfy, maybe a touch too long? love the pockets, will look good over stockings too 🙂
