A Garment A Week – Week 10 – 11/03/16

Woo Hoo I’ve made it into the double digits!

I have soooo many projects on the go at the moment and I didn’t think I was going to get any finished by today! So I spent some time on this one yesterday. I love the fabric and knew it needed to be a nice dress. The flowers have gold metallic highlights and the photos really don’t do it justice. It’s 100% cotton sateen and I believe it was a curtain sample!  I found the 1m piece in a second hand shop fabric pile.  Lucky I had a similar colour fabric to match as the flowers wouldn’t have been enough by themselves to make an entire dress.

I still think it needs a few alterations before I’d be comfortable wearing it out. The cross over bodice is still a little loose, a bit more lift at the shoulders will fix that. And I wanted there to be no darts on the back with the design but that was a mistake as the fit isn’t right. I think I would slim the shoulders 1cm and lower the arm hole under the arm. The armhole was lower but raising the shoulders pulled it up. I also cut the front beige side with gathers or pleats but after looking like I had a huge puffy stomach I unpicked the side and waistline and pulled it flat.
Definitely a pattern that would’ve benefited from a full calico mock first. But I just get too excited and can’t wait.  I need to learn more patience lol.

There’s an invisible zip in the centre back which was good practice matching up the beige angles to make the back looked crossed over too. The front bodice pieces are fully self lined and independent of each other, the floral side is over-locked (serged)  at the bottom and it joins into the side seams under the beige panel.  I also hand stitched an invisible hem.
A cute little jacket or fur, some nude pumps and I’ll be all ready to go out in this cooler weather 🙂  The races maybe?  ooh then I get to make a hat too!
