A Garment A Week - Week 33 - Stretch knit skirts with elastic waists - stitchremedy.com

Sorry it’s a late post this week!  (Late on Facebook and late on the blog! lol)
Tough week with my health topped off with an ‘in bed migraine’ day yesterday 🙁 Feeling better today.
Lucky I had these ready to go – I should have just taken photos as soon as I had them finished lol
Two stretch knit comfy skirts this week 🙂

I wanted something quick to make up and something I’ll get wear from. Anything comfy gets lots of wear. I also wanted to try sewing the elastic just into the top of the waist of the skirt, so it looks as though there’s no waistband but there’s nice wide elastic underneath. The elastic is great, nice and firm, helps hold in the tummy. The top edge did end up a little bulky especially on the pink skirt as the front was double layered. I think the elastic may be on the thick side for this application too. All in all it worked well, lessons to take away.

I wanted to make the side gathered version in the grey but there wasn’t big enough pieces of the fabric left (it’s the leftovers from my leggings, week 21?) So the only piece of fabric I had suitable was bright pink! I was slightly adverse to the colour but I’m getting used to it lol.
The pink one is stitched about 5cm up from hem on each side, then hemmed all around, then gathered and rest of sides stitched up. Waist done last.

The grey one ended up having to be cut into three panels, front and back, the centre one ended up a bit wide but still looks ok.

The hem on the grey skirt will also need redoing. It’s ‘roped’ or twisted as I’ve stitched it, so I may have to borrow the coverseam machine at work one day and do it properly.
The sides are overlocked only for stretch.
I will definitely get some use from these, super comfy to wear. And I think they’ll look great in summer too – once my legs aren’t so white!
Black Tee with sequins on the back shoulders is a ‘Me Made’ top from a few years ago 🙂
